Depression is a term used to describe a mental condition characterized by severe feeling of hopelessness and inadequacy. People with depression feel down and blue. The state of depression can be very frustrating and debilitating at times. It may make the patient so tired that he does not want to get out of bed or so anxious that he can’t calm down.
Whatever his symptoms are it can be a challenge to pull him out of that dark hole. Seeing the doctor should be the first step in dealing with depression of course, but there are other tools that can help. Exercise may be the last thing on mind but it is one thing that may give immediate relief from depression. A number of studies have demonstrated a positive relationship between exercise and clinical depression.

Exercise increases brain volume in hippo-campus (a structure involved in learning and memory), increases blood levels of some cytokines in patients with major depression and affect neuro-transmission.

Exercise has the potential to influence patient’s physical and phychological health simultaneously. Exercise can fight mild to moderate depression because it- increases one’s sense of mastery which helps if he does not feel in control of his life exercise.

The problem with depression is that it drains all the energy, making every task seem like monumental efforts. When it comes to managing depression there is no right or wrong exercise. Higher intensity exercise, like jogging or aerobics can help one’s body release feel good hormones while lower intensity exercise like yoga or palates can help a person to relax and connect with his body.
